  1. The Key

From the recording The Key

I got the idea for this song by watching an interview with Janet Jackson.  I just somehow got inspired by something that she said and ran with it.  My experiences of living in different states while I was an Air Force brat also came out in this song.  Being on base there was a cultural cross-section of people all put in one place.  Add into that equation that one of our longest assignments was in Cheyenne, Wyoming where I got to learn about the American Indian culure through friends. Later I would be reminded of this at college and truly enjoyed having friends from all over the world and learned how everyone has basic needs and we're all essentially the same. However, in America we tend to think we know everything and live in the best country on earth. Nothing wrong with being proud of your country, culture, or heritage. I think people forget that it took people from all over the world to make our country great and we still have a lot to learn from other cultures. I guess I've always loved learning. I think it's imperative that we learn about our history and the history of others because we might just find ourselves.  The Key=Education

The Key
Words and Music by Rob Hawkins
Verse 1
Sister sister don't you chastize me
I live my life you live yours but don't judge me
Don't want no problems and I don't need no conflicts
Live and let live but not by false pretense
Pre-Chorus
The world's a better place than will let let it be
Peace on earth at let one another free
Quit giving me excuses and hidin' behind the truth
Look me in the eye because I've got some proof for you
    Chorus
Ask my mother, ask my wife
Education is the key in this lock of life
Ask my brothers both black and white
You'll see many colors in your walk of life
Verse 2
Sister sister don't you patronize me
I've got a mind that's for sure but don'tcha hate me
If  you take an eye for an eye well I've got some news
There's other brothers out there that would take a tooth for a tooth
You'll see living color in this walk of life
