From the recording It Was You All Along

In this love song we find the main character frustrated lwith the inability to control most things in life. I wrote the song so it could be sung by a man or woman never disclosing the main character's gender/sexuality. But, the chorus explores the idea that we all are on a quest to find love and it's important not to lose faith in finding it. In my experience we find love when we least expect it...things sneak up on us when we're preoccupied with living our lives dealing with the day to day. I do believe in this sentiment "I loved you before I met you, I just had to find you." Once we meet "the one", we know it's right and all of our energy goes to realize the dream of that love. I once heard Don Was, a famous record producer, say that when you don't know what to write about or have writer's block watch a movie and pretend you are writing the score. Afterall, art spawns art and inspiration is always around the corner.  It Was You All Along is a song I've had in my back pocket for awhile. Of all of the songs on the project, it recieved the most rewrites and production overhauls.  I was encouraged by a hit songwriter that this had a very commercial chorus and to re-write it so from that day on I never gave up on it.

Lyrics

It Was You All Along
Words and Music by Rob Hawkins
Verse 1
Isn't it crazy how things work out?
Not much we can do beyond a shadow of a doubt
There's a lot of hit or miss
Life slides between our fingertips
It's you I can't deny It's you I can't deny
Chorus
     It was you all along
I could always see what we needed to be
     It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
Verse2
In the big picture the plot's thickening
The screenwriter pushes his pen impatiently
Souls stuck between a hard place and a rock
Still trembling from the aftershock
So I let out a sigh but it's you I can't deny
Chorus
     It was you all along
I could always see what we needed to be
     It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
Guitar Solo
Chorus
    It was you along
    It was you all along
I could always see what we needed to be
    It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
    You all along
I could always see what we needed to be
    It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
Throughout all the right and wrong
    It was you all along
